Instead, she decided to pursue a career in teaching, with a focus on Braille or kindergarten education.

Over the years, she appeared in other school productions, including Peter Pan and Andrew Wendy, The Jungle Book and Charlotte’s Web.

After losing her eyesight, Calle gave up on her ambition to become an actress. However, her fortunes changed when her principal announced that a casting agency was looking for a blind girl for a TV show, just 10 days into the new school year.

She seized the opportunity and auditioned for the role of “Chloe”, a teenage blind girl in the series In The Dark.

To enable her to cope better, the show’s creators hired a blind writer and had Walton’s scripts written in braille for better understanding.

Speaking about her role in Monadnock Ledger-Transcript, Walton stated that she is quite different from her the character she played in the series.

“My character is really different from me. I consider myself to be a bit more bubbly, energetic, and social, while my character Chloe is a bit more reserved, shy, and not very confident in herself.”

Calle Walton movies

So far, Calle Walton is known for her role in the series, In The Dark.

From the very beginning, In The Dark received criticism for not casting a blind actor to play the lead character who is visually impaired.
While this missed opportunity was unfortunate, the show found success through the portrayal of “Chloe Riley” by Walton, who has been truly blind for several years due to a brain tumour that destroyed her optic nerve.

In The Dark, the series which brought Walton into the limelight, is a comic story that follows a blind woman’s search for answers regarding her friend’s murder.

“In the course of her investigation, she (the blind woman) crosses paths with my father, who happens to be a detective. It was this chance encounter that led to a budding friendship between myself and the movie’s lead character,” she recounted.

Because of her condition, learning the lines was not easy for Walton.

She said, “I could not get the lines right.

“The others there were better. I did not think I had the stuff to get the part. A few weeks later at my grandparents’, we got a call. They wanted to hire me.

“I can recall that when I finally got the words right, they liked my acting, but they also liked that I did not give up and I kept getting the lines wrong and was still showing a passion for acting.”

Calle Walton’s head injury

Walton is not a stranger when it comes to having health challenges.

After some initial testing, it was discovered that she had a mass on her optic nerve caused by sarcoidosis, an inflammation-related disease. She had to take multiple medications and drugs to keep her tumour under control.

Despite her vision challenges, Walton fought hard to preserve her eyesight throughout her childhood. However, the tumour eventually grew towards her optic nerve, worsening her vision further.

In her senior year, Walton’s eyesight deteriorated to a degree that made doctors realise that she had been misdiagnosed for all these years. The tumour in her eye was discovered to be cancerous, resulting from a birth defect. Walton received chemotherapy for a year and ultimately survived cancer, but lost her eyesight completely.

Reacting to her blindness, Walton’s mother Tracey Bean said: “We were monitoring her and had appointments and she was stable. So everyone was surprised she when woke up with no sight.”

Walton herself also pointed out that “it took time to realise I was fully blind. It definitely hit me hard and I did not expect to lose it that fast. I went through periods where I thought: ‘How is my life going to be?'”

Today, Walton serves as a role model, constantly discussing modifications to attain the frequently overlooked privilege of independence, and then conveying this message to those who require it.
