Musk’s educational journey differs significantly from that of most teenagers his age. Instead of attending a local high school, he is currently enrolled at Ad Astra, a school established by his father, Elon Musk, and former teacher, Joshua Dahn, in 2014. Ad Astra was founded to educate the older Musk children, as well as some of the children of SpaceX employees.

Ad Astra’s primary goal is to tailor education to each student’s aptitudes. In a 2015 interview, Elon Musk explained that the school does not follow traditional qualifications and prefers to match education with students’ skills and abilities, disregarding age-based separation.

Although Elon Musk’s children go to Ad Astra, a school that emphasises artificial intelligence, design, and coding, the institution does not offer music or sports programmes. Reports indicate that the school had more than 40 students in 2022.

Ad Astra, which was first situated at the old residence of actor Gene Wilder in Bel-Air, Los Angeles, does not have a publicly known location anymore since the billionaire sold the property in October 2020.

Damian Musk is currently dedicated to theoretical physics research. Though Musk may be relatively young, he is already honing his career skills. He currently works for two organisations: the Fermilab Theory Division and the Caltech INQNET consortium. He specialises in the field of high-energy physics, particularly focusing on quantum information.

According to information from WOLFRAM, Musk also possesses a strong passion for writing fiction and playing music. His goal is to investigate the connection between science and music, utilising scientific principles in his creative pursuits and artistic principles in his research.

Musk’s passion for playing the piano became public knowledge when a video surfaced on Twitter in February 2021. Initially misattributed to his brother, Saxon, the video showed Musk playing the piano for elderly people. His father later corrected the attribution in his response to the video.

Elon Musk

Elon Reeve Musk, born on June 28, 1971, is a prominent business magnate and investor. He holds various leadership roles in multiple successful ventures, including being the founder, Chie Executive Officer (CEO) and chief engineer of SpaceX; the angel investor, CEO and product architect of Tesla, Inc.; the owner, Chief Technical Officer and Chairman of Twitter; the founder of the Boring Company and X Corp.; the co-founder of Neuralink and OpenAI; and the President of the Musk Foundation.

As of June 2023, Musk is widely recognised as the wealthiest person globally, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index and Forbes’s Real-Time Billionaires list. This status is primarily attributed to his ownership stakes in Tesla and SpaceX, with an estimated net worth of approximately $225 billion (according to Bloomberg) or $233 billion (according to Forbes).

Musk was born in Pretoria, South Africa, and initially attended the University of Pretoria before moving to Canada at the age of 18. He acquired Canadian citizenship through his mother, who was born in Canada. After two years, he enrolled at Queen’s University and later transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, in the U.S., where he obtained bachelor’s degrees in economics and physics. In 1995, Musk relocated to California to attend Stanford University but dropped out after just two days.

Subsequently, he co-founded Zip2, an online city guide software company, alongside his brother Kimbal. In 1999, Zip2 was acquired by Compaq for $307 million. Musk then co-founded X.com, a direct bank, which merged with Confinity in 2000 to form PayPal. PayPal was later acquired by eBay for $1.5 billion in 2002.

In 2002, with an initial investment of $175.8 million, Musk established SpaceX, a company focused on spaceflight services. He also became an early investor in Tesla Motors, Inc. (now Tesla, Inc.), an electric vehicle manufacturer, in 2004. Musk assumed the roles of chairman and product architect and took over as CEO in 2008. Furthermore, in 2006, he played a role in the creation of SolarCity, a solar energy company that was eventually acquired by Tesla and rebranded as Tesla Energy. Musk co-founded OpenAI, a nonprofit artificial intelligence research company, in 2015.

The following year, he co-founded Neuralink, a neurotechnology company developing brain-computer interfaces, and the Boring Company which focuses on tunnel construction. In 2022, he completed the acquisition of Twitter for $44 billion.

Musk’s public statements and views have made him a polarising figure, with some criticism directed at his unscientific and misleading statements, including instances of spreading COVID-19 misinformation. In 2018, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed a lawsuit against Musk for falsely tweeting about securing funding for a private takeover of Tesla. As part of a settlement agreement with the SEC, Musk stepped down as chairman of Tesla and paid a $20 million fine.
