What is a power couple?

According to dictionary.com, a power couple is a romantic or married couple in which each individual is well-known or successful in their own right. The phrase occasionally refers to contented, successful, regular marriages.

In the middle of the 1980s, ‘power couple’ started to complement and ultimately replace ‘super couple’. In 1983, it was used for the first time in print to describe Bob and Elizabeth Dole, who were the US senator and education secretary at the time, respectively. The Doles were referred to as a power couple by many other publications in 1984 and 1985, including U.S. News, The New York Times, and Cosmopolitan. Here, “power” refers to the pair’s significant sway.

The Doles held political influence, but other non-politician couples soon began to wield power. Two married Olympic cyclists were referred to as a power couple by Cosmopolitan in 1987, together with the Doles and the recently wed Madonna and Sean Penn. In the same year, Phylicia Rashad, best known for playing Clair Huxtable on The Cosby Show and Ahmad Rashad, a former football player and sports presenter, were both featured in Ebony as TV’s power couple.
