A Nigerian businessman has narrated how he dealt with his staff named Samuel, who didn’t show appreciation after his salary was increased from N100,000 to N200,000.

According to the Facebook user identified as KAA, he quietly increased all his employees’ salaries in November 2023 following the increase in fuel prices.

However, there was this particular staff member, Samuel, who didn’t say anything after his salary was increased by N100,000.

Samuel received the N200,000 for months with no form of acknowledgement. The boss then suddenly decided to revert to his old salary.

The staff member who didn’t make any move when his salary was increased, wasted no time in reaching out to his employer to call his attention to his reduced salary.

The employer reminded him about how he didn’t say a word when his salary was doubled but was quick to complain when it was reduced to the normal amount.

He then told Samuel to pay the excess N100,000 he has been receiving if he still wants to keep his job.

This sparked mixed reactions online as netizens shared their thoughts.

Ijeoma Happiness Amaechi: “The employee was very wrong I must say. But please sir don’t sack him, rather you can reduce the salary to 100k, if he feels he can’t cope then he can go.”

Dalo Rhyetta: “What if it wasn’t an increment but a payroll error?
So he would have kept quiet and milk the system to the end?
The guy had no integrity.”

Omonike Adedeji Ayoola: “Some people have entitlement mentality that they feel whatever is given to them is their right ”

Ibrahim Adio: “He got it wrong by seeing the discretional increment as an obligation by his boss whereas it’s a previledge. Hence, his entitlement mentality instead of gratitude. Please forgive him by not taking off the job.. He just need to be taught gratitude.”

Precious Luke: “From his point of view, he likely saw the increase as a permanent adjustment to his salary. Reverting back without prior notice could understandably cause confusion and concern. Communication about changes in salary is key to maintaining trust and morale within the workplace.
He’s not doing you a favour working for you. So you too are not doing him a favour.
I just feel it’s miscommunication.”

Cephas Chris Walker Rock: “The truth is that the guy is not an honest person. He lack self integrity if not when started seeing 200k with formal notification or any informal notification, he should have informed the company or you as his boss that he is getting almost double of his salary. But as soon as you went back to his usual salary, if he had self integrity and if he isn’t a greedy person he should have kept silent over it like he did when he was seeing 200k.
He lack Intelligence and he isn’t a diligent person but greed guy. Self entitlement is his sickness.
If you sack him, he deserve it because if you allow him to stay back he display devilish character that will shock you. So before he shocks you, shock him by relieving him his service.”

Abigail John Jai: “Something Similar happened to me. I was tempted to keep quiet but my mouth will not allow me, so I had to asked my boss… Oga you do mistake for my salary… He said no! Na increment. See me smiling from ear to ear sheepishly.”

Joshua Ekene: “From my View point, Both the employee and employer is guilty.
Here are my reasons.
✅As an employee when you see money beyond the agreed salary you’re means to report to ascertain if it’s a transaction error.
And even seeing additional 100% of your salary for three consecutive months without saying anything.
S/he has a criminal character.
✅The employer is supposed to write an official letter as a company to the employee on the increase of the employee’s salary which could be through email or other methods communicating the increase.
That being said, the employer has right to sue the employee or sack him but he should tender mercies and recognise his own fault as well.”

Covenant Saturday: “This will teach him a lesson he will never forget in a hurry. In all you do, show gratitude and don’t feel entitled to what ever people do for you.
That was such a support from you to your employees. Many can only wish to have such opportunity.
It is well!”

EreOluwa Gbemisola Femi-Alonge: “It is a character in integrity flaw.
You received a raise, the right thing is to ask formally, you don’t know if it’s an overpayment.
The best thing for him to have done since November is to clarify the payment, not be entitled or assumed it must be increased.
Not even a simple text message of, ‘sir I received so so, I don’t know if it’s an oversight.’ Or a simple ‘THANK YOU sir’ all those months.”
