Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced that it plans to lay off thousands of its employees in the coming days.
ABC News reported that Meta plans to disengage over 11,000 employees (which represents up to 13% of its workforce).
Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg made this announcement in a letter that was sent to its employees.
In the letter, Mark Zuckerberg labelled the decision some of the most difficult changes he’s making in the history of Meta.
He said the move is to make Meta a leaner but more efficient organisation by cutting discretionary spending. Zuckerberg says he takes full responsibility for the decision and is incredibly sorry for the affected individuals.
“We are also taking a number of additional steps to become a leaner and more efficient company by cutting discretionary spending and extending our hiring freeze through Q1. I want to take accountability for these decisions and for how we got here. I know this is tough for everyone, and I’m especially sorry to those impacted.
We’ve cut costs across our business, including scaling back budgets, reducing perks, and shrinking our real estate footprint,” Zuckerberg said.
