Zodiac signs: Why you behave the way you do, compatibilities

Zodiac signs: Why you behave the way you do, compatibilities

Before we start, I want to announce that Gemini is the best of the zodiac signs. Bam! Signed, stamped, and sealed. Any other arguments can be had with associated keyboards.

Now that that has been settled, welcome. You’re probably here because you’ve heard a lot about zodiac signs over the years, especially when people use them to justify certain behaviours. You hear statements like “I’m temperamental because I’m a Scorpio” or “I’m very possessive because I’m a Libra” because of the belief that certain behavioural traits are ingrained in people born under a specific zodiac sign.

Now, I’m no astrologer, and it isn’t my place to approve or disprove whatever theories have been postulated. All I can do is give a detailed breakdown of what it means, and you can make of it what you will.

Once again, Gemini is still the best. Don’t @ me. Let’s go.

Zodiac Signs

Zodiac Signs, a.k.a. Sun Signs, a.k.a. Astrological Signs, are the thirty-degree sectors that constitute the Earth’s 360-degree orbit around the sun. Twelve in number, they are listed from the first day of spring, the vernal equinox, known as the First Point of Aries, with each sign named after a constellation that the sun moved through annually while crossing the sky. Okay, okay, I know I’ve lost you, so let me rephrase that.

There are twelve zodiac signs; Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpion, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. Each of them is named based on the sun’s position during a certain event, which, in this case, happens to be your moment of birth, hence the name sun sign. From an astronomical standpoint, we know that the sun doesn’t move since its stability anchors the solar system. However, from our position here on planet Earth, the sun appears to be in constant motion and changes signs once a month. So, in other words, if you’re born when the sun was in a particular position, you fall under the accompanying Zodiac sign.

In addition, each zodiac sign is believed to fall under one of four triplicities (fire, earth, air, or water) and one of three quadruplicities (cardinal signs, fixed signs, and mutable signs). Understanding how these -cities interact with the signs is important if you want to learn how people under the signs are expected to behave.

The Four Triplicities

The Four Triplicities

The concept of triplicities refers to the division of the zodiac signs by natural elements, which form a harmonious trine aspect… Aaaand I lost you again. Triplicities indicate how easy and positive the flow of energy between each sign is and are based on the four elements (Avatar fans will love this one).

Air

The signs Aquarius, Gemini, and Libra are known for versatility, communication, and intelligence. They are believed to approach life from a logical point of view, although they can sometimes be fickle or indecisive.

Earth

Just like the physical Earth itself, Capricorn, Taurus, and Virgo embody personalities of hard work and dependability.

Fire

Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius are believed to be ruled by the fire element, making them passionate, creative, and energetic. They are also known for their spontaneity, ingenuity, and knack for inspiration.

Water

This element symbolizes dreams, emotion, healing, intuition, and the cycles of rebirth and death. The signs Cancer, Pisces, and Scorpio thrive by going with the flow, as they prefer an intuitive and emotional approach to life.

The Three Quadriplicities

The modality or mode of a sign indicates its position in the season it is found, and each of the four elements from the triplicities above manifests in three modalities: cardinal, fixed, and mutable. According to astrologers, these modalities highlight the challenges and obstacles that result in growth.

Cardinal

The Zodiac signs Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn are all part of the cardinal modality, which means they are brisk and ambitious. Their keywords include action, dynamic, initiative, and great force.

Fixed

The fixed modalities Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius are all thought to be determined and stable, with great willpower. They are the types to follow through on a project and are inflexible and resistant to change.

Mutable

By virtue of being mutable, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces are versatile and resourceful, able to adapt to complications. They’re the kind of people who put the final touches on projects.

Zodiac Dates, Personalities, and Compatibilities

As said earlier, there are twelve Zodiac signs spanning an average period of thirty days or a month.

Aries, the Ram (March 21 – April 19)

Aries, the Ram (March 21 - April 19)

By virtue of being the first of the Zodiac, Aries loves to be number one, and this dynamic fire sign doesn’t back down from competition. Bold and ambitious, they love being the pack’s leader, and they prefer to initiate rather than complete. If you have a project you need to get done, call Aries because they will dive into the most challenging of situations and strive to come out on top. Just like a ram!

Taurus, the Bull (April 20 – May 20)

Taurus, the Bull (April 20 - May 20)

The saying slow and steady wins the race totally sums up Taurus. Represented by the bull, Taureans would instead prefer relaxing in a three-hour bath, followed by a deep tissue massage and then a dessert spread of succulent flavors. However, this doesn’t mean they’re lazy; they’re naturally dependable and hardworking (qualities that make them perfect for long-term, stable relationships). They just don’t believe in stressing themselves too much because they have a skill for manifesting. No moss, no fuss.

Gemini, The Twin (May 21 – June 20)

Gemini, The Twin (May 21 - June 20)

The cat that got killed by curiosity was probably a Gemini because that is their defining trait. They are spontaneous, erratic, playful, and interested in so many pursuits, which is no problem since they have the capacity for two and the resourcefulness to get it done. Gemini is recognized as the sacred duality in the universe, with a versatile intellect and quick wit.

I did tell you it’s the best (insert smug look).

Cancer, the Crab (June 21 – July 22)

Cancer, the Crab (June 21 - July 22)

Just like a crab that weaves between the sea and the shore, Cancer has the seamless ability to exist in both emotional and material realms. They are very loyal, stick to their roots, and excel at getting what they want to take care of themselves and their loved ones. They are very intuitive and well-spoken and use their intellect towards their ambitious tendencies.

Leo, the Lion (July 23 – August 22)

Leo, the Lion (July 23 - August 22)

Represented by the king of the jungle, these spirited fire signs are always delighted to embrace and flaunt their royal status. Theatrical, fiery, and vivacious, they love to bask in the spotlight and celebrate themselves and always try to make a good first impression. Their creativity and fiery magnetism put them at the center stage of life and the forefront of people’s attention, but their desire to be in the spotlight can sometimes result in jealousy when they aren’t.

Virgo, the Virgin (August 23 – September 22)

Virgo, the Virgin (August 23 - September 22)

The saying “if you want something done, give it to a busy person” is the Virgo anthem. Precise, perceptive, practical, and utter perfectionists, Virgos are logical, practical, and systematic in their approach to life, representing the ideal of wholeness and perfection. They are designed to be industrious, methodical, and efficient, characteristics that enable them to get through pretty much any endeavor and give them the impression that they’re the best person to do it all.

Libra, the Balance (September 23 – October 22)

Libra, the Balance (September 23 - October 22)

Do you know those scales of justice symbols? Yep, that represents Libra. Defined by balance, harmony, and justice, this association reflects their fixation on establishing equilibrium and fair play. They typically approach life from a logical point of view and are obsessed with symmetry and consonance in all areas, especially in matters of the heart, although at times, they can be indecisive or fickle.

Scorpio, the Scorpion (October 23 – November 21)

Scorpio, the Scorpion (October 23 - November 21)

As a water sign, Scorpios are eloquent, intellectual, and curious. And because they’re associated with the fixed modality, they tend to be determined and stable. They are emotional and resilient with a knack for zeroing in on important questions and ferreting out the secrets that lie within. These qualities also make them extremely independent, and their pride won’t let them ask for help, which can get them into trouble.

Sagittarius, the Archer (November 22 – December 21)

Sagittarius, the Archer (November 22 - December 21)

A video game freak knows that archers are usually the most adventurous character types, and Sagittarians embody that. Always on a quest for knowledge, they launch after their pursuits like arrows and tend to be free-spirited, fiery, and versatile. However, this desire for freedom can also clash with their other responsibilities

Capricorn, the Goat (December 22 – January 19)

Capricorn, the Goat (December 22 - January 19)

The last earth sign of the Zodiac, Capricorns are ambitious and determined initiators who are at their best when facing obstacles, and as cardinal signs, they are very good at seizing initiatives. Grounded and hardworking, these traits also impact how they view romantic relationships, as they want someone who is equally as ambitious. The power couple. To them, the most valuable resource is Time, and they know that dedication and perseverance is the only way to climb the mountain.

Also, I cannot leave without adding this. Ever heard of a “sea-goat”? It’s a mythological water creature with a goat’s body and a fish’s tail that represents the Capricorn sign. Sounds like something from Bikini Bottom, I know.

Aquarius, the Water Bearer (January 20 – February 18)

Aquarius, the Water Bearer (January 20 - February 18)

Aquarius is actually the last zodiac air sign despite the aqua in its name. Ingenious, progressive, and revolutionary, Aquarius is represented by the water bearer, a mystical healer who bestows water, or life, upon the land, making them humanitarian visionaries who seek to make the world a better place. They are curious and intellectual and known for their honesty; while they don’t like conflict, they will often speak their mind without sparing others’ feelings.

Pisces, the Fish (February 19 – March 20)

Pisces, the Fish (February 19 - March 20)

The last of the zodiac, Pisces, represents the end of the zodiacal journey and wraps up the qualities of the other eleven previous signs into a perfect state of fullness. Having absorbed every lesson – joy, pain, fears, and hopes – learned by the other signs makes them the most sensitive, intuitive, and empathetic sign of the entire zodiac, almost the dictionary definition of psychic. Their wholeness gives them the curiosity and impassioned nature of the water element, making them the dream partner due to their caring and loving nature.

Zodiac Signs and Compatibility

If you watched Avatar: The Last Airbender, you will remember how hard it was for Aang to learn earthbending, because it was the polar opposite of his air heritage. Zodiac signs and their association with elements are like that. Generally speaking, signs within the same element are compatible, so for example, Aquarius, Gemini, and Libra air signs are all a good match.

Couples outside the element may add extra spark – Fire and Air signs are good together as they share outgoing energy that keeps the relationship lively. For example, Leo provides the energy and passion that a relationship needs, while Geminis bring youth and playfulness, a dynamic that will always feel fresh and never boring.

Water and Earth signs are also a natural fit. Scorpio will appreciate Taurus’ sense of security, who will enjoy Scorpio’s sensuality and passionate nature; this recipe for great sex life and will make them feel naturally at home with each other. Both also have a piquancy for pleasure, so you can expect extravagant, fancy dates.

However, sometimes you might find yourself out of your element, literally. Fire coupled with Water or Earth is at cross-purposes, as fire feels water-logged or hemmed in with each respectively, while water feels fire is too hot to handle and Earth that they will get burned.

Water signs, for their part, feel frustrated with Air signs and their refusal to show their feelings, while air deems water to be over-sensitive and dislikes the rules that the Earth signs embody. Meanwhile, Earth feels ruffled by air.
