What is When the Moon Hatched?
When the Moon Hatched is a romance fantasy novel written by Sarah A Parker. Originally published by HarperCollins on April 4, 2024, the book is the first of The Moonfall Series. It is also the bestselling fantasy phenomenon.
When the Moon Hatched book
Set amid magic, dragons, violence and an intricately created world of fantasy, When the Moon Hatched follows the story of the heroine, Raeve, a bounty hunter who is trying to bring justice to a lawless land. She is a moody loner FMC who has lost memory of her past life due to trauma. While she appears aggressive and cold, Raeve is willing to lay down her life to protect any child, woman or person in need.
In one of her quests, she is captured by the Guild of Nobles—a group of dual-beaded elementals who imprison her for trial and… death. However, she is rescued by the King of the Burn, Kaan Vaegor, who turns out to be the hooded stranger who has been stalking her for weeks.
Although Raeve does not understand why Kaan has rescued her, she agrees to follow him to his kingdom assuming the worst. Kaan, on the other hand, is described as a harsh ruler, but he turns out to be fiercely loyal and protective to those he loves – especially Raeve, whom, unknown to her, he shares a romantic history with.
Along the line, a slow-burn romance develops between them. Raeve does not understand why she is developing feelings for Kaan. However, Kaan, who is madly in love with her, does but chooses to give her space to regain her memories. As their romance sizzles, Raeve is forced to confront her forgotten past which contains happier times and… poisonous ones.
While When the Moon Hatched has been praised for being a masterpiece, some elements of the book have been criticised. For starters, the book begins with a complete glossary explaining terms for age, time, creatures, beings and pronunciations. However, some readers feel that the glossary, while appreciated, can be distracting and confusing, because they have not read the story yet. Instead, the glossary should have been written after the story is finished.
Also, the book has multiple points of view (POVs) and flashbacks, which many readers may find confusing. Although Raeve has no memory of her past life, one wonders why she does not question why she does not remember until the truth is revealed at the end of the story.
Overall, When the Moon Hatched was well-received among readers who are looking forward to the next instalment.
