Tupac Shakur

Tupac Shakur

Shakur was born on June 16, 1971, in East Harlem, Upper Manhattan, New York City. Although originally named Lesane Parish Crooks, he was given the name Tupac Amaru Shakur at the age of one. The name was inspired by Túpac Amaru II, the descendant of the last Incan ruler, who was executed in Peru in 1781 after leading an unsuccessful rebellion against Spanish rule. Shakur’s mother, Afeni Shakur, chose this name as she wanted her son to have a name associated with revolutionary and indigenous people worldwide,

Shakur had siblings, including an older stepbrother, Mopreme “Komani” Shakur, and a half-sister, Sekyiwa Shakur, who was two years younger than him. Both of Shakur’s parents, Afeni Shakur and his biological father, William “Billy” Garland, were active members of the Black Panther Party in New York during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Before Shakur’s birth, his mother faced trial as part of the Panther 21 criminal trial in New York City but was ultimately acquitted of over 150 charges.

Many other members of Shakur’s family were also involved in the Black Panther Party and the Black Liberation Army. This includes his stepfather, Mutulu Shakur, who spent time among the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives and was convicted for a 1981 robbery during which police officers and a guard were killed.

Shakur’s godfather, Elmer “Geronimo” Pratt, was a prominent Black Panther member who was initially convicted of murder but later had his conviction overturned after evidence of his innocence was concealed by the prosecution. His godmother, Assata Shakur, a former member of the Black Liberation Army, was convicted of the first-degree murder of a New Jersey State Trooper and remains a fugitive wanted by the FBI.

During the 1980s, Shakur’s mother faced challenges finding work and struggled with drug addiction. In 1984, the family moved from New York City to Baltimore, Maryland. Shakur attended various schools in Baltimore, including the Baltimore School for the Arts, where he explored acting, poetry, jazz and ballet. At this school, he developed a friendship with actress Jada Pinkett, who became the subject of some of his poems.

Shakur showcased his musical and comic talent during his time at the school. He won rap competitions, with his friend, Dana “Mouse” Smith, serving as a beatbox. He had a diverse taste in music, enjoying artists such as Kate Bush, Culture Club, Sinéad O’Connor and U2.

In 1988, Shakur relocated to Marin City, California, a disadvantaged community in the San Francisco Bay Area. He attended Tamalpais High School in nearby Mill Valley, participating in several theatre productions. While he did not graduate from high school, he later obtained his GED.

In 1989, Shakur started recording music using the stage name, MC New York. During this time, he attended poetry classes taught by Leila Steinberg, who later became his manager. Steinberg arranged a concert for Shakur and his rap group Strictly Dope, which led to him being signed by Atron Gregory, the manager of the rap group, Digital Underground. In 1990, he joined Digital Underground as a roadie and backup dancer.

Shakur gained prominence in West Coast hip-hop with the release of his debut album, 2Pacalypse Now, in 1991. He followed it up with successful albums like Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z… (1993) and Me Against the World (1995). His album, All Eyez on Me (1996) achieved Diamond certification and marked a shift towards more aggressive gangsta rap.

In addition, Shakur found success as an actor. He appeared in several films such as Juice (1992), Poetic Justice (1993), Above the Rim (1994), Bullet (1996), Gridlock’d (1997) and Gang Related (1997).

During his later years, Shakur faced personal challenges, including legal troubles and incarceration. He was shot multiple times in different incidents, including one in a New York recording studio. In 1995, he served eight months in prison on sexual abuse charges but was released pending an appeal.

After his release, Shakur signed with Death Row Records and became involved in the East Coast-West Coast hip-hop rivalry.

On September 7, 1996, he was shot four times in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas and passed away six days later. His death occurred amidst a feud with his one-time friend and rival, the Notorious B.I.G., who was also killed in a drive-by shooting six months later.

Following his death, several posthumous albums were released, including the double-length album Greatest Hits (1998) and the critically acclaimed The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory (1996), which was released under the stage name Makaveli. Shakur’s music continued to receive recognition and accolades, with multiple albums achieving Platinum and Diamond certifications in the United States.

In 2002, Shakur was posthumously inducted into the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame. In 2017, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His influence on the music industry was further acknowledged by Rolling Stone, which ranked him among the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

In 2023, he was posthumously honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
