Who are ugly people?
Ugly people refer to individuals whose physical features are considered unpleasant to the eyes. Ugly people are regarded as unattractive, repulsive and even offensive.
For years, scientists have found that attractive people are often favoured based on their looks. They get better opportunities, better jobs and even better pay. However, there are studies that ugly people are not doing so badly for themselves. A piece published in the Journal of Business and Psychology found that attractive people do not have the power. Those rated “very unattractive” earned more than any other category, including those judged “most attractive”. In other words, the least attractive three per cent of the population out-earned the 50 per cent who are considered sort of ugly or average looking.
According to a publication on CNN, some study authors have theories about why this came to be. One theory opined that the very ugly were simply more intelligent or better educated than their relatively more attractive counterparts. Another school of thought believe that humans tend to favour the underdog, especially if the underdog is a woman.
However, there are other areas where ugly people may find it difficult to thrive. For instance, studies have found good looks can be linked to political success. The underdog theory does not apply to politics.
Whatever the reason, ugly people can still thrive even in unpleasant environments. Ugliness is not a disease. Instead, it should be a stepping stone for better things to come. In addition, it is best not to judge people by their looks. Behind all that ugliness, you may find a gem.

Top 10 ugliest people in the world
1. Godfrey Baguma
Uganda’s Godfrey Baguma is the first on the list. Nicknamed Ssebabi, Baguma is a professional cobbler who hails from the Kyanzana area of the country. At the age of 10, he developed an abnormal swelling in his cheek. Due to his condition, his mother abandoned him and he was raised by his grandmother. Growing up, Baguma was scared to go out and mingle with people. But now, he has fully embraced his features and even won the world’s ugliest man competition in 2002.
Baguma suffers from a rare medical condition known as fibrodysplasia. This condition affects the growth and placement of cells and tissues in the human condition. However, his condition did not stop him from finding love and he has married three times and has eight children.
2. Dennis Avner
Dennis Avner, popularly known as the Staking Cat, was an American man known for his extensive body modifications, which were intended to make him look like a tiger. Born in Flint, Michigan on August 27, 1958, and raised in Suttons Bay, Michigan, Stalking Cat began tattooing and surgically modifying his face after reportedly being guided by his vision and feelings of affinity for the tigress in the early 1980s. He held a world record for “most permanent transformations to look like an animal” with 14 surgeries. On November 5, 2012, Avner was found dead on the floor of his garage, with a gun on the floor. His death was ruled a suicide. He was 54 years old.
3. Maison Sere
Next on the list is Zimbabwe’s 2015 Ugliest Man winner. Sere has several teeth missing and is known for his torn overalls, which he wore during the contest. Despite his missing teeth, Sere smiles a lot, an expression that many find hilarious.

4. Erik Sprague
Erik Sprague, professionally known as Lizard Man, is an American freak show and sideshow performer. He is famous for his extreme body modifications which include sharpened teeth, a full-body tattoo of green scales, bifurcated tongue, subdermal implants and green-inked lips. A former PhD candidate at the University at Albany, Sprague regularly performs sideshow acts, such as the human blockhead, fire eating and breathing, gavage, sword swallowing, the bed of nails, the Human Dartboard, the cranial corkscrew and the insectivore. He is an icon in the body modification community. However, his modifications have left him one of the ugliest people in the world.
5. Donatella Versace
Italian fashion designer, businesswoman, socialite, model and sister of Versace luxury brand founder, Gianni Versace, is the first woman on the list. She has also been regarded as the ugliest woman in the world due to her bizarre looks. Interestingly, Donatella was not born ugly. Her current ugly looks were reportedly self-inflicted through plastic surgery.
6. Michael Berryman
Michael John Berryman is an American actor. Berryman was born with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, a rare condition that resulted in the absence of sweat glands, hair and fingernails. His condition later became a blessing in disguise as Berryman has been able to create a career out of portraying characters in many cult films, horror films and B movies.
7. Rick Genest
Rick Genest, popularly known as Zombie Boy, was a Canadian artist, actor, fashion model and musician. Born on August 7, 1985, in LaSalle, Quebec, and raised in Châteauguay, Genest had the Guinness World Record for the most tattoos of human bones (139). He was tattooed as a living skeleton on over approximately 90 per cent of his body and worked in various sideshows and freak shows across Canada as an illustrated man. He later founded his show, Lucifer’s Blasphemous Mad Macabre Torture Carnival.
Genest, however, died from a fall from the third-floor balcony at his apartment on August 1, 2018. His death was initially ruled a suicide but later overturned as accidental.
8. Joshua Glen Box
Joshua Glen Box is another American man with unique features, which make him ugly. He has no nose and has also suffered other devastating facial injuries. In 2019, Box was sentenced to 15 years in prison for two counts of child porn possession. He was previously convicted in Washington County Circuit Court on five counts of possessing child porn in August 2015 and sentenced to 10 years probation.
9. Kala Kaiwi
Kala Kaiwi is a Hawaiian tattoo and body modification artist. He has earlobe stretches or ‘flesh tunnels’ measuring 109mm (4.3 inches) in diameter. Additionally, Kaiwi has silicon horns implanted on his head, stretches in his nostrils, tattooed eyebrows and studs all over his face. In 2014, Kaiwi won the Guinness World Record for the largest non-surgically made stretch earlobes.
10. Pauly Unstoppable
Paul Alexander, popularly known as Paul Unstoppable wraps up the list of ugly people. Born on July 11, 1994, in Westchester, situated in the U.S. state of New York, he is a content creator, especially on YouTube. Unstoppable is also regarded as ugly due to the way he disfigured his face with implanted horns, pierced nose, tattooed eyebrows, stretched ears and studs on his face.
