Liverpool, thought to be out for fierce revenge, were second best on the night and fell to Karim Benzema’s 78th-minute tap-in from Vinicius Jnr’s pass.
The Reds, who were finalists last season, would now be more concerned about qualifying for the competition next season as they battle inconsistency in the Premier League.

Elsewhere at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Naples, Napoli were handing Frankfurt a sound beating.
