UCL: Chelsea through to next round, Leipzig shock Madrid, other results

Chelsea beat FC Salzburg on Tuesday to progress to the round of 16 of the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League.

The Premier League giants put their disappointing 1-1 draw against Manchester United over the weekend behind them as Mateo Kovacic and Kai Havertz scored to give Graham Potter’s side victory in Austria.

Kovacic scored in the 23rd minute before Chukwubuike Adamu levelled for the hosts in the 48th minute. Havertz then restored the Londoners’ lead in the 64th minute.

In Group F, RB Leipzig were impressive as they defeated champions Real Madrid 3-2 at the Red Bull Arean Leipzig. The German side were two goals in the 18th minute through Josko Gvardiol and Christopher Nkunku in the 13th and 18th minutes.

Vinicius Jnr pulled one back for the LaLiga giants in the 44th minute. Timo Werner restored Leipzig’s two-goal lead in the 81st minute before a 93rd-minute penalty by Rodrigo kept the scoreline respectable for the visitors.

Milan demolished Zagreb 4-0. Matteo Gabbia opened the scoring in the 39th minute before Rafael Leao and Olivier Giroud (penalty) scored in the 49th and 59th minutes. Robert Ljubicic scored an own goal to make it four for the Serie A side.

Celtic vs Shakhtar Donetsk

Giorgos Giakoumakis grabbed Celtic’s goal in the 34th minute before Mykhailo Mudryk levelled in the 58th minute.

Sevilla vs FC Copenhagen

Sevilla returned to winning ways after their loss in the hands of Real Madrid in the LaLiga over the weekend. They beat Copenhagen 3-0.

Youssef En-Nesyri scored for Sevilla in the 61st minute before Isco doubled their lead in the 88th minute. Gonzalo Montiel completed the scoring in the second minute of added time.

It ended 0-0 at the Signal Iduna Park. Riyad Mahrez lost his 58th-minute penalty, with Gregor Kobel saving his side from defeat in front of their fans.

However, City and Dortmund have qualified for the round of 16.

Benfica vs Juventus

Benfica were 4-3 winners over Juventus. Antonio Silva scored for the Portuguese side in the 17th minute before Moise Kean levelled four minutes later. Joao Mario then scored in the 28th minute from the penalty spot to hand Benfica the lead. Rafa Silva’s 35th and 50th-minute goals put Benfica 4-1.

However, Juventus came rallying back with Arkadiusz Milik scoring in the 77th minute, and Weston McKennie added another two minutes later. They could not find the equaliser and lost 4-3 at the Estadio da Luz.

Juventus have now lost every chance of proceeding to the next stage of the competition.

Paris Saint-Germain vs Maccabi Haifa

PSG absolutely demolished Maccabi at the Parc des Princes. It ended 7-2.

Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe grabbed a brace. Neymar and Carlos Soler also scored, with Maccabo’s Sean Goldberg scoring an own goal to compound his side’s woes. Abdoulaye Seck scored a brace for the visitors.

PSG and Benfica will qualify from their group, while Maccabi and Juventus fight for Europa League qualification.
