Uche Jombo: Abiriba-born actress living her dream on the global stage

Adherent watchers and observers of Nollywood will certainly not have overlooked the face of Uche Jombo for the past two decades and counting. Her interpretation of her roles, particularly as a villain or as a lover girl, has received critical acclaim.

So, who is Uche Jombo, the on-screen personality whose vociferous opinions on Nigeria’s polity in recent times have earned her a truckload of enemies?

The Jombo family of Abiriba, Abia State on 28 December 1979 welcomed a newborn daughter, who was named Uche Jombo. She attended the University of Calabar and the Federal University of Technology Minna where she graduated with degrees in Mathematics and Statistics and Computer Programming, respectively.

In 1999, Jombo made her debut in the Nigerian film industry as she starred in Visa to Hell. She has been credited in more than 200 Nollywood movies, including Games Men Play, Lies Men Tell, Holding Hope, A Mother’s Fight, Unconditional, A Time to Love, Be My Wife, and Celebrity.

Over the years, she has transited from being an actor to becoming a screenwriter, director and producer of movies. Jombo began executive producing her movies in 2008, following the establishment of her studio, Uche Jombo Studios. She has written and collaborated on screenplays for many films, including The Celebrity, Games Men Play, Girls in the Hood, and A Time to Love.

Some of the movies she has produced are Holding Hope, Nollywood Hustlers and Damage. To her credit, she has directed movies such as Lost in Us, How I Saved My Marriage and Heaven on My Mind.

Asides from acting, Jombo is also an entrepreneur. She has served, at various times, as a brand ambassador to several companies, including a telecommunications company and a health and fitness brand.

Jombo got married to Kenny Rodriguez, an American, on 16 May 2012. The couple got married in a private wedding on a beach in Puerto Rico.

The duo welcomed their first child, Mathew Chinedu Rodriguez, on 27 May 2015. However, the state of the actress’ marriage is unclear at the moment as she has hardly been seen with her husband publicly for over two years. Also, speculations arose after she removed Rodriguez, her husband’s surname, from her name on her Instagram page. The surname, however, subsists on her Twitter page.
