Who Owns Scientific Anglers?
Orvis, an American family-owned retail business, acquired Scientific Anglers in 2013. This acquisition allowed Orvis to expand its product offerings and enhance its presence in the fly fishing market.
Orvis’ acquisition of Scientific Anglers has led to the development of innovative fly-fishing products and a broader range of options for anglers.
Some notable events that have shaped the organization since Orvis took over are:
In March 2014, Scientific Anglers, under the ownership of Orvis, unveiled the SharkWave, a fly line of unparalleled technological prowess. The product is the world’s first triple-textured and triple-coloured flyline. The tip section of each line displayed the distinctive diamond-shaped Sharkskin embossing, while the heads and running lines bore the golf-ball dimpled Mastery Texture. A smooth section, known as the Tactile Reference Point, graced the junction of the head and the running line.
The year 2016 witnessed the introduction of the Sonar Series of Sinking Lines, a new standard in premium sinking fly line technology.
The advent of Patented AST + Slickness in 2017 marked a pivotal moment for Scientific Anglers’ premium lines. It significantly enhanced the slickness and durability of premium floating fly lines. In the same year, Amplitude Textured Fly Lines made their debut in the market, becoming the first fly lines to incorporate the patented AST+ slickness additive. This achievement established a new industry benchmark for slickness and durability in premium fly lines.
In 2019, the company introduced the Absolute Leader and Tippet, heralded as the finest performing materials available. Absolute nylon leaders and Tippet boasted an impressive 29 per cent higher wet knot strength compared to their previous materials, and up to 40 per cent higher wet knot strength when measured against their competitors. Meanwhile, Absolute Fluorocarbon leaders showcased a remarkable 15 per cent increase in wet knot strength compared to their earlier materials and offered exceptional clarity and abrasion resistance.
Scientific Anglers introduced paper-based leader packaging in the same year, a significant step towards environmental responsibility. This packaging was not only 100% recyclable but also biodegradable, including the materials, ink, and window. This initiative aimed to protect their streams and reduce their environmental footprint, earning us the Fly Fisherman Green Award in 2020.
In 2021, Scientific Anglers took another stride towards sustainability with the introduction of a recyclable paperboard flyline spool. This move substantially reduced waste compared to the previously used plastic spools.
The year 2022 marked the release of the patent-pending Regulator Spool, simplifying the task of loading fly lines onto reels.
