Douglas Jack Agu, better known by his stage name Runtown, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and producer.

He gained popularity in the industry after he released his debut song Gallardo with Davido

Runtown released his debut album, Ghetto University, along with the tracks For You and Mad Over You as a follow-up to the single.

Runtown Biography

Runtown was born on August 19, 1989, to Mr. and Mrs. Agu. He is an indigene of Enugu State but grew up in Lagos and Abuja. After losing his father, Runtown moved to Abuja with his mum, who worked at the Ministry of Health. He relocated to Lagos when his mum was transferred again. 

He completed his primary education in Lagos. Runtown studied Fashion Management at a fashion institute in New York City, United States.


From a young age, Runtown realized that music was his career and worked hard to advance in the field. 

He released his debut single, Gallardo, created by Soge, in 2007. That same year, he and Phyno relocated to Lagos, where he began working with musicians like J-Martins and Timaya.

Runtown and Phyno collaborated in 2008 to establish Penthauze Music in Lagos. He released two songs, Party Like It’s 1980 and Activity Pikin, on the Penthauze record label. 

Then in 2014, he agreed to a deal with Prince Okwudili Umenyiora, CEO of Dilly Motors and owner of the record company Eric-Many Entertainment. 

The success of Runtown’s Gallardo propelled him into the public eye. Superstar musician Davido contributed vocals to the tune, which helped Runtown land a record deal with Eric Manny Entertainment and other performing opportunities.

Gallardo was so popular it took home the 2014 Nigerian Entertainment Awards’ Collaboration Of The Year Award. He released his debut album, Ghetto University, in 2015 after spending months working on it. 

Runtown was the buzz of the business at the tail end of 2016 and the beginning of 2017. This resulted from his song Mad Over You‘s popularity when it was released on November 4th, 2016. In 2020, he released Tradition.

Runtown’s record label, Soundgod Music Group, was introduced in June 2018. After his contract with the Eric Many Entertainment Record Label expired, he started this band. The Soundgod Music Group is a multifaceted music and entertainment firm revolutionizing the African music industry.

The record Soundgod Reloaded was released in 2021. In September 2020, one of the album’s songs, Kini Issue, was released.

Runtown allegedly wrote Davido’s Aye in 2014, according to media reports. Runtown claimed in an interview with the Nigerian Tribune, “That query has been posed to me by many people. In several interviews, Davido has discussed the history of the song. Ask David or read his interviews if you want to understand more about Aye.”

The well-known Nigerian artist is embroiled in yet another dispute with his estranged record company, Eric Many. The singer faced contempt of court charges from the record company in July 2018. This comes after Runtown defied a court order and released a brand-new song.

After a seven-month legal struggle, Runtown won a ruling on Friday, January 23 2019, prohibiting his troubled record label, Eric Many, from meddling in his matters. 

Runtown’s ban on performing was immediately suspended, and Eric Many was forbidden from carrying out the court’s suspended orders, according to the ruling rendered by Justice O.A. Musa.

Runtown/Adut Akech

In 2015, Runtown and Selena Leath started dating. Model and actress Selena Leath has made several appearances in music videos. The couple has a son named Zamar. 

Later, he began dating South Sudanese model Adut Akech, but their relationship ended owing to their inability to resolve their differences. They decided to separate in July 2021.


In June 2018, Runtown debuted the nonprofit Project: We Are New Africa. He founded WANA together with his business partners Ifeanyi Nwune and Ugo Mozie. Africans with innovative minds are encouraged by WANA to push the boundaries of their culture. 

It’s an empowerment initiative that seeks to give back to society by constructing facilities for the underprivileged in nearby towns. It offers training programs and educational resources for students, orphans, and physically challenged people.
