Night at the Museum is a 2006 American fantasy-comedy film directed by Shawn Levy. Written by Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, the Night at the Museum cast include popular Hollywood actors like Ben Stiller, Carla Gugino, Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney, Bill Cobbs, Paul Rudd and Robin Williams.

The film is based on a divorced father who gets hired as a night watchman at New York City’s American Museum of Natural History. He subsequently discovers that the exhibits come to light at night, having been animated by a magical Egyptian artefact, the tablet of Akhmenrah.

Night at the Museum was produced and released by 20th Century Fox on December 22, 2006. It received a critical approval rating of 43 per cent based on 138 reviews and an average rating of 5.2/10 on Rotten Tomatoes. Also, museum officials at the American Museum of Natural History, a building which inspired the set of the film, credited the film for increasing the number of visitors during the holiday season by almost 20 per cent.

Meanwhile, Night at the Museum grossed $574.5 million at the box office worldwide. It was the fifth highest-grossing film of 2006 and also the highest-grossing film worldwide of the trilogy. Also, two sequels Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb in 2009 and 2014 respectively. An animated sequel, Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again, was released on December 9, 2022.

Ben Stiller as Larry Daley

Comic actor, Ben Stiller, plays Larry Daley, a divorced father of one who gets hired as a night watchman at New York City’s American Museum of Natural History. Larry is also an aspiring inventor who seems down on his luck. As a result, his son, Nick, does not want to grow up to be like him. Although he is dedicated to what he does, he seems to be the type to give up easily when trouble comes. Thankfully, he is talked out of quitting his job due to the chaos caused by the animated exhibits. With the help of his son and the exhibits, he prevents a robbery at the museum and keeps his job as a result.

Carla Gugino as Rebecca Hutman

Rebecca Hutman is a docent guide at the Museum of Natural History and a historian writing her dissertation on Sacagawea. She is also a friend of and a love interest to Larry. Rebecca is one of the few who knows the secret of the museum.

Dick Van Dyke as Cecil Fredericks

Cecil Fredericks is a veteran security guard at the museum and the main antagonist of the movie. He is an evil, corrupt and manipulative night guard who pretends to be friends with Larry whom he hired because he is retiring. However, he conspires with the other guards to steal the tablet of Akhmenrah and frame Larry for it.

Mickey Rooney as Gus

Gus is another veteran security guard at the museum and an antagonist. He is also grumpy, mean and rude. Gus does not like Larry, calling him silly names like hot dog, lunchbox and cupcake. He is also strong for an old man, punching Larry hard in the face towards the end of the movie.

Bill Cobbs as Reginald

Reginald is also one of the three main antagonists in the movie. He is a veteran security guard at the museum who teams up with Cecil and Gus to steal the Egyptian artefact and frame Larry.

Jake Cherry as Nicholas “Nick” Daley

Nick is Larry’s son with his ex-wife, Erica. Nick loves his dad but does not look up to him. Instead, he considers quitting ice hockey and plans to become a bond trader like his mother’s fiancé, Don, when he grows up. Nick’s adoration for Don worries Larry, who also tries to be available to his son. So, Larry takes Nick to the museum at night and together they stop Cecil and his group from stealing the tablet of Akhmenrah.

Ricky Gervais as Dr. McPhee

Ricky Gervais as Dr. McPhee

Dr. McPhee is the museum’s curator and director. He first fired Larry for the foam in the Neanderthal display. Then, he attempts to fire him again due to news reports about the night’s strange events such as The Neanderthals leaving cave paintings in the museum’s subway station and Rexy’s dinosaur tracks in Central Park. However, Dr. McPhee rehires Larry after the news boosted attendance at the museum.

Kim Raver as Erica Daley

Erica Daley is the ex-wife of Larry Daley and the mother of Nick. Although they are divorced, the ex-couple co-parent their son. However, Erica feels Larry is a bad example to their son but sympathises with his job situation. She is also engaged to Don, whom Nick adores more than his father.

Paul Rudd as Don

Paul Rudd as Don

Don is a businessman who is Erica’s fiance and a great father figure to Nick. However, he seems to try to upstage Larry. For instance, he takes Nick from school for half a day, something Larry is supposed to do. Also, Nick looks up to him and even invites him to Career Day at his school.

Robin Williams as Theodore Roosevelt

Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt is one of the major characters in Night at the Museum. He is the wax sculpture of the 26th President of the United States. Teddy is also one of the exhibits that come to life every night. He becomes one of Larry’s closest friends.
