An undergraduate medical student, Usman Abubakar-Rimi at Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto refused to let the strike hinder him as he ventured into street food vending.

Reports from The Daily Trust stated that Usman, a student in the medicine and surgery department launched a new career after the Academic Staff for Union of Universities (ASUU) began its prolonged strike.

He said that he began selling food in Sokoto metropolis since the strike began in a bid to engage in productive living.

Since the strike action, he has managed to employ 8 people in his shop.

In his words, Usman said,

“I hired a shop, employing eight people manning tea and Indomie joints, selling bottled and canned drinks, masa, rice and beans, pepper soup and meat along with the Point of Sale (POS) business.”

“A plate of food sells from N200 and above depending on the needs of the customer.”

Abubakar-Rimi expressed his excitement about becoming an employer of labour. He revealed that he opened a second shop on Fodio Rd in Sokoto where he sells men’s and women’s clothing as well as shoes and bags.

He also stated that he never assessed any loans from banks but made good use of an opportunity that presented itself during the Pandemic lockdown, which led to the start of an egg and chicken distribution business.

Usman noted that the small business at the time opened up other business opportunities for him as he gained many contacts through which he supplies restaurants. He talked more about his plan to expand his business and called on the Federal Government to find a lasting solution to the strike in favour of Nigerian students.
