Mercy Nneda Chinwo is a Nigerian gospel musician and songwriter. She won Season 2 of Nigerian Idol in 2012.


Mercy Chinwo was born in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on September 5, 1991. She was very young when her father passed away. Mercy Chinwo is the first child and first daughter of six children.

Testimony, Chinwo’s debut single, was released in 2015; Igwe a year later. She was a minister of gospel music in 2017.


At 8, Chinwo began singing in the children’s choir. She then joined the adult choir and took on the role of music director at her neighbourhood church.

Before deviating completely into music, Mercy Chinwo was interested in acting. She entered the spotlight in 2012 after taking first place in Season 2 of Nigerian Idol. She then received her first movie part in Yvonne Nelson’s 2013 film House of Gold, which also starred Omawumi, Majid Michel, and Yvonne Nelson. 

Beginning with projects by notable Nigerian gospel music singers, including Sammie Okposo, Joe Praize, Buchi, Chris Morgan, and Preye whom she featured in the song Eze, Mercy Chinwo began her musical career as a voiceover artist. 

After receiving the endorsement of EeZee Concepts, a Christian music label run by Mr. Ezekiel ThankGod, Mercy Chinwo made a significant leap in 2017. Additionally, EeZee Concepts partnered with gospel singer Minister GUC.

Mercy Chinwo released Testimony in 2015  with Igwe following in 2016. In 2018, she released her debut album, The Cross my Gaze. Many soul-stirring gospel songs from the album are still popular among Nigerian Christians. International musicians have worked with Mercy Chinwo. Excess Love, her most well-known song, was remixed by her along with JJ Hairston, Youthful Praise, and The Gratitude.

Despite having published numerous singles, Mercy Chinwo has only ever released one album. Excess Love is currently Mercy Chinwo’s song that has probably broken down barriers. It was followed by Chinedum, both of which were released in June 2018, and Bor Ekom, which was released in 2019. 

With the help of her song Excess Love, Mercy Chinwo gained widespread popularity and a position among the top female vocalists in the Nigerian gospel music scene. With her track, Akamdinelu, she made yet another significant impact on the gospel music scene. The song has received over a million streams on several music streaming services. 

On July 3, 2020, she released Satisfied, her second album, a 13-track collection. Hit songs from the album included Baby Song and Na you dey reign.
