Baer’s acting journey began in 1949 when he appeared in “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” at the Blackpool Pavilion in England. He entered the professional acting world in 1960 at Warner Bros., making appearances on various television programmes such as Maverick, Surfside 6, Hawaiian Eye, Cheyenne, The Roaring ’20s, and 77 Sunset Strip. However, it was his role in The Beverly Hillbillies in 1962 that catapulted his career to new heights.

Even during the nine-year run of The Beverly Hillbillies  Baer managed to take on other roles and appeared in shows like Vacation Playhouse and Love, American Style, as well as the movie, A Time for Killing. After the show’s cancellation in 1971, he faced challenges due to typecasting and this led him to focus on feature films both in front of and behind the camera.

He wrote, produced and played a significant role in the drama Macon County Line (1974), which became one of the highest-grossing movies relative to its budget at the time. Additionally, he wrote, produced and directed The Wild McCullochs (1975).

Baer showcased his innovative approach by using the title of a popular song as the anchor for his 1976 film Ode to Billy Joe, which he also directed. The film’s success inspired a trend in the motion picture industry, with many subsequent movies adopting song titles as their names. He further pursued creative endeavours, such as attempting to develop a Beverly Hillbillies-themed hotel and casino but the project faced challenges and delays due to legal issues and zoning conflicts.

In 2014, Baer sued CBS as he alleged that a secret deal with a Des Moines-based restaurant chain was interfering with his plans to capitalise on his role as Jethro Bodine from The Beverly Hillbillies.
