Manchester City win Premier League title after Aston Villa scare

Manchester City on Sunday, the last day of the 2021/22 Premier League season, emerged champions after coming from behind to defeat Aston Villa by 3-2.

The Steven Gerrard-tutored Villa had taken a 2-0 lead thanks to Matty Cash and Philippe Coutinho. However, City an Ilkay Gundogan brace and a Rodri goal gave Citizens the much-sought victory.

At Anfield, Liverpool were hoping City would slip as they beat visiting Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1. While Villa were in front at the Etihad Stadium, Liverpool fans cheered their team to utilise the advantage as they were playing a 1-1 draw.

Things turned on their head when Manchester City grabbed the equaliser and went ahead to win.

The season ended with City amassing 93 points while Liverpool finished on 92.

In other final day games, Arsenal could not qualify for the Champions League despite a 5-1 whipping of Everton after Tottenham won 5-0 at Norwich.
