Lip blushing is a new beauty trend that is generating a lot of interest these days. It is part of permanent and semi-permanent makeup which has become popular lately since you can just get up and go without spending hours applying makeup to your face.
So, if you are looking for fuller lips on the go, then try lip blushing. However, you must first understand the beauty procedure.
Therefore, read this article to know more about lip blushing and how it is done.
What is lip blushing?

According to KNS, lip blushing is a form of permanent makeup where colour, definition and shape are added to your lips. Also known as a cosmetic tattoo, it is done to enhance the colour and shape of your lips and give the impression of more fullness.

Note that lip blushing is not the same as lip fillers. Lip fillers are a gel made of hyaluronic acid, a substance that is found naturally in your skin. These fillers are injected into lips to make them fuller. On the other hand, lip blushing creates an illusion of fuller lips without adding volume. Adding colour to your lips is the key to this procedure, unlike lip fillers. The colour is subtle, making your lips look natural and full.
So how is lip blushing done? The procedure is similar to getting a conventional tattoo but with some key differences. It is performed by an esthetician or a tattoo artist who uses a small machine.
They can be any of the following:
- Permanent cosmetic pen rotary
- Coil machine
- Linear device
- Digital rotary machine
All of these machines perform the same function. They are used to create small cuts in the lip and then deposit the coloured ink into the cuts. An outline will be drawn first, and then the lip colour will be filled in. This procedure takes between 30 minutes to an hour and it is usually not painful. To be on the safe side, you can opt for a topical anaesthetic to numb your lips.
Is lip blushing safe?

Lip blushing is a semi-permanent makeup and a tattoo of some sort. Naturally, this type of makeup carries some risks. This is why it is important to go to a professional and licensed tattoo artist or esthetician who follows proper procedure. Make sure you take a good look at their previous works to determine if you can hire them.

There is always a small risk of infection and scar tissue. Going to an unskilled artist or unhygienic practices increases that risk. Also, lip blushing can lead to an allergic reaction. So, if you have a history of allergic reactions, you can either forget about proceeding or request for a small amount of the pigment to be tattooed on you ahead of the appointment to determine any possibility of an unwanted reaction.
Swelling, bruising, capping and dryness are considered normal after the procedure. At first, the colour may be vivid. Over time, it will fade to your desired colour.
Lip blushing before and after

Now that you know how lip brushing is done, you may want to try it. So, here is what you should expect:
- Make your research. Explore your options on the permanent makeup artists and studios in your area. Look at their online portfolios including their social media handles. Then you can make your choice.
- Choose the lip colour and overall shape you want before your lip-blushing appointment. Consider your natural colouring, including your skin tone and shade undertones, which will help you determine which lip-blushing colours will be best on your lips.
- Stay hydrated because dry, cracked or chapped lips make you ineligible for a lip-blushing tattoo. Chapped lips will not absorb the colouring easily. Therefore, exfoliate and moisturize your lips every night for five to seven days before a lip-blushing session. Drink plenty of water.
- Make sure you do not have an allergic reaction or side effects history. Also, do not take any blood-thinning medications, such as Ibuprofen, Aspirin, fish oil, or vitamin E, for at least a week before lip blushing. They may cause excessive bleeding.
- Expect less or no pain. However, a numbing cream should be on standby, in case it is needed.
- The pigment on your lips may appear bolder immediately after lip brushing. It is completely normal as your lips may swell between 24 and 48 hours after the procedure.
- To enhance healing, keep your lips hydrated every day. Peeling might occur, which is also normal. However, do not do not pick at the peels, as it may re-open wounds.
- Once the flaking and peeling are done, your lips undergo healing, which means the pigment colour may fade into the natural colour. This is because the skin thickens and temporarily conceals the ink during healing which can take between 7 and 21 days after the procedure.
How long does lip blushing last?
Lip blushing can last between two to three years, depending on factors such as how much time you spend under the sun, whether you smoke or not and the colour you choose.
