Katalin Novak: Dutiful mum, wife who broke the glass ceiling in Hungary

In this age of digitisation and modernisation, the rights of women are being amplified more than ever. As Sheryl Sandberg, the ex-chief operating officer of Meta (Facebook) once said: “We need women at all levels, including the top, to change the dynamic, reshape the conversation, to make sure women’s voices are heard and heeded…” This is what Katalin Novak has done.

She has shattered the mystifying glass ceiling and risen to become a national leader in her country, the first woman to ever attain such a position in her country. So, who is Katalin Éva Novák, the President of Hungary?

Katalin Éva Novák was born on September 5, 1977, in Szeged, Hungary. She identifies as a white person and practices Christianity as her religion.

Novák attended Ságvári Endre Secondary School in Szeged, completing her schooling in 1996. She then proceeded to the Corvinus University of Budapest, where she studied law and economics; and the University of Szeged, where she read law. She also took courses at the Paris Nanterre University while she was a student.

Novák is fluent in Hungarian, French, English and German.


Novák began working at the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs under Minister János Martonyi in 2001. While working at the ministry, she specialised in European Union and European matters.

After spending six years at home with her kids, she worked as an advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2010 to 2012 before serving as Head of Cabinet at the Ministry of Human Resources from 2012 to 2014.

Novák moved up in the country’s political hierarchy as she served as Hungary’s Secretary of State for Family and Youth Affairs in the Ministry of Human Capacities from 2014 to 2020, and was appointed Minister of Family Affairs till 2021. She was elected as the Vice President of Fidesz, the governing party in Hungary, from 2017 to 2021. As the party’s deputy leader, she oversaw the party’s foreign policy among other things. 

Since 2018, she has served in the Hungarian National Assembly.

On 21 December 2021, Novák was announced by Viktor Orbán, Prime Minister of Hungary, as his nominee in the 2022 presidential election.

On 10 March 2022, she got 137 out of 188 votes in the National Assembly, winning the election. By the virtue of her election, Novak became the first woman to be elected as the President of Hungary; a monumental feat in the country’s history. She also became the youngest President to be elected in Hungary.
