iPhone XR: Specification, review, price in Nigeria

Apple Inc. produced and released the iPhone XR on September 12, 2018, after successfully integrating breakthrough technologies from iPhone XS. It is part of the iPhone’s 12th generation, which includes the iPhone XS and XS Max. The phone is considered an affordable flagship or budget flagship due to the fact that the features were either removed or downgraded to reduce the price.

The iPhone XR has the same processor as the XS and XS Max. It was available in black, white, blue, yellow, coral, and red colours, making it the second iPhone released in white, yellow, and blue after iPhone 5C in 2013. It was also available in three storage capacities – 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. However, the 256GB version was discontinued after the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro release.

The iPhone XR was the best-selling Apple model in 2018 and the most popular smartphone globally in Q3 2019. By September 2020, iPhone XR had sold 77.4 million units worldwide and became the eighth best-selling smartphone of all time.

On September 14, 2021, Apple discontinued the iPhone XR and iPhone 12 Pro, with the models removed from the company’s official website after the announcement of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro. The iPhone XR is still available through third-party retailers.

The XR was rated IP67 for being dust and water-resistant. This means it can stay in one-metre deep water for up to 30 minutes. The XR is also covered by scratch-resistant glass with an oleophobic coating to prevent smudges.

Display

Unlike the X, XS, and XS Max, which has the OLED screen, the iPhone XR has an LCD known as Liquid Retina. The XR also has a 1792 × 828 pixels resolution and a pixel density of 326 PPI. However, 120 Hz Touch Sample Rate can be found in XS, XS Max, and XR. The XR comes with Haptic Touch instead of 3D Touch. The Haptic Touch enables the user to long press until a vibration from the Taptic Engine is felt.

The XR screen-to-body ratio is 79.3%, much higher than the 67.5% of the iPhone 8 Plus. But it is still lower than most phones in its category.

Camera

The iPhone XR has a single rear camera, unlike the other X-series. However, like the XS and XS Max, it features the same main camera sensor utilizing a 1/2.55″ sensor size and 1.4μm pixel size. The XR does not have optical zoom because of the single camera, and it was rated 101 by DxOMark.

A modified version of Portrait Mode is included despite the single-camera setup. The XR allows the user to adjust the background bokeh effect after taking a photo through software.

Software

Initially, the iPhone XR came with iOS 12 installed out of the box. It is also compatible with iOS 13, released on September 19, 2019. However, it was upgraded to iOS 14 and iOS 15 on September 16, 2020, and September 20, 2021.

iPhone XR reviews

The good

The iPhone XR is cheaper than the iPhone X family and still delivers most of its features. It has an excellent big screen and a fast performance. Also, the XR has a Face ID and wireless charging.

The camera is almost as good as the XS. It has a 7-megapixel f/2.2 selfie camera on the front, and a 12-megapixel f/1.8 camera on the back, which use Apple’s new Smart HDR system that rivals Google’s HDR+ on the Pixel 3.

The XR has a variety of colors to choose from. They are all extraordinarily sleek and pretty. It also offers faster charging on the same pads compared to older iPhones. The water and dust resistance is top-notch, which makes it fine for an occasional splash.

The bad

The iPhone XR’s display has a low resolution and a low pixel-per-inch density relative to other phones. However, the concern has been dismissed, with some pointing out that users may not notice.

Also, aluminum is slightly less durable than the steel XS. The accessory ecosystem for the XR is a little thin. Apple removed EarPods and power adapters from all new iPhone boxes, including the XR, from October 2020, as part of the company’s environmental initiative. So you’re likely going to have a little headphone problem.

The company included USB-C to Lightning cable, which is compatible with USB-C charging sources but incompatible with the previous but more common USB-A power adapter. This means users who don’t have USB-C charging sources will either have to purchase a lightning cable or USB-C power adapter separately.

Apple stopped producing iPhone XR on September 14, 2021. But you can still find them in popular Nigerian gadget stores or online stores like Jumia and Konga.
