Hubba bubba gum
Before its launch, Hubba Bubba was initially known as “Stagecoach” during its development and early manufacturing at the now-closed Wrigley plant in Santa Cruz, situated in the U.S. state of California. The earliest TV commercials for the bubble gum in the U.S. were set in a Wild West town and featured the Gumfighter character, portrayed by actor Don Collier.
At the end of each commercial, the Gumfighter declared: “Big bubbles, no troubles,” with a humorous response from Western film veteran, Dub Taylor, emphasising Hubba Bubba’s reputation for being less sticky than other brands.
During the 1980s, its primary competitor was Bubblicious. In the United Kingdom, the original bubble-gum flavour was unavailable for many years, with only apple, strawberry and cola options available.
However, as of June 2012, the UK market included strawberry, original and apple flavours. The original flavour made a comeback in April 2012, promoted as “chunkier and bubblier”. Flavours available in Australia include cherry, cola, peach, strawberry, lime, pineapple, apple, orange, grape and watermelon.
Various flavours, including lime, berry, cherry and generic fruit, were available in different countries like Croatia, Germany, Norway, and Canada.
Hubba Bubba sold in the U.S.. contains bioengineered (Genetically Modified or “GMO”) ingredients, with the company explicitly labelling them as such.
The product initially came in chunks, sold in packets of five, but recent variations include shredded pieces, rolls of bubble gum tape in the UK, plastic jugs of crystals, boxes of tiny gumballs and candy-filled options.
The brand was discontinued in the U.S. in the early 1990s but made a comeback in 2004. Commercials in the U.S. feature stop-motion animation by Aardman, reminiscent of Wallace and Gromit’s style.
In Canada, 2D traditional animation by Chuck Gammage Animation is used, featuring the characters Hubba (purple) and Bubba (pink).
As of 2012, Hubba Bubba offers its original flavour called “Outrageous Original” in the U.S., along with other options like “Strawberry Watermelon”, “Cool Cola”, “Sweet & Sassy Cherry” and “Mystery Flavor”. Hubba Bubba introduced Mystery Max and Mystery Tape in 2010.
