HR expert shares why interviewed candidates don’t get hired 1

Dr. Hidima, a Nigerian Human Resources manager, has shared insights into why some candidates interviewed do not get the job.

During an interview session for a graduate internship, Hidima noted that while some candidates impressed her, others fell short, particularly in how they presented themselves and their skills.

The HR manager observed that being honest is crucial, but candidates should avoid being overly blunt. For example, Martha, a candidate who was generally straightforward about her skills, faltered when she exaggerated her proficiency in a specific area, leading to a poor evaluation.

On the other hand, Martins, another candidate, was excessively candid about his non-relevant work experiences and his intention to use the internship to fund his cleaning business. This approach led to an unfavorable impression and a quick end to his interview.

Hidima emphasized that candidates should focus on presenting information pertinent to the role they are applying for. Over-sharing irrelevant details or exaggerating skills can damage their chances. The key takeaway is to align responses with the job’s requirements and demonstrate a clear understanding of the role.
