Thirty-three-year-old Wales legend, Gareth Bale has declared his retirement from club and international football on Monday, January 9, 2023.

Gareth Bale, who led Wales to their first-ever FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euros since 1958, announced the information on social media, much to the surprise of fans. While some were initially hoping for the forwarder to make a return to European football, he has made his decision.

Posting on Twitter, he wrote: “After careful and thoughtful consideration, I announce my immediate retirement from club and international football. I feel incredibly fortunate to have realised my dream of playing the sport I love. It has truly given me some of the best moments of my life. The highest of highs over 17 seasons, that will be impossible to replicate, no matter what the next chapter has in store for me.

“From my very first touch at Southampton to my last with LAFC and everything in between, shaped a club career that I have an immense pride and gratitude for. Playing for and captaining my country 111 times has truly been a dream come true.”

The forward achieved five Champions League titles in nine years between 2013 and 2022 with Real Madrid.

Bale started his career as a left-back in Southampton’s famed academy before joining Tottenham in 2007, where he gradually converted into a left winger, attaining new wins.

Following his achievements with Tottenham, he moved to Real Madrid, where he played between 2013-22 before ending his career at Los Angeles FC.
