Fisherman gets top government job for rescuing 24 people from crashed plane

A Tanzanian fisherman, Jackson Majaliwa, who broke into a crashed plane to rescue 24 people has been rewarded with a job by the Tanzanian President.

Johnson was immediately hired by President Samia Suluhu Hassan into the country’s Fire & Rescue Brigade.

Tanzania’s Prime Minister, Kassim Majaliwa, confirmed this in a statement on Monday, November 7, 2022.

”I order the Interior Ministry to recruit Majaliwa into the country’s Firefighting and Rescue Brigade so that he can receive the required training for him to become fit for the job.

The fisherman should be trained in rescue mission,” PM Majaliwa said.

Johnson showed courage by leading other fishermen to rescue passengers and crew members on board the Precision Air plane which crash-landed in Lake Victoria as it approached Bukoba airport from Dar es Salaam.

He was also awarded N350,000 ($438) for his bravery.
