It was the first time since 1972 that Newcastle had won consecutive Premier League matches against Manchester United.

The match had looked destined to go Newcastle’s way from the onset as they took the game to their visitors, keeping possession as they laid siege to the Red Devils’ goal.

Andre Onana, fresh from his abysmal performance against Galatasaray in the Champions League in mid-week, fumbled a corner as he missed the ball in an attempt to punch clear. He was fortunate his defenders cleared the ball to safety.

The Cameroonian, however, was alert to stop Miguel Almiron’s effort. He was then left helpless, watching on as a Kieran Trippier free-kick rattled off his bar.

In the second half, Trippier’s ball across the six-yard box was pounced upon by Gordon, who swept in at the back post.

However, Newcastle suffered their own misfortune in the match as goalkeeper Nick Pope was taken off after injuring his shoulder in a corner with six minutes remaining.

Martin Dubravka replaced him.

Eddie Howe will hope his dependable stopper recovers early from injury as he is already without some major stars. He had to name the exact team that played a 1-1 draw at Paris Saint-Germain in mid-week and six teenagers on his substitute bench.
