Manchester United, who started with new boy Rasmus Hojlund leading the attack, looked the better side in the opening stages of the Premier League match, but Danny Welbeck’s 20th-minute strike turned the tide.

Simon Adingra had crossed into the United box, Adam Lallana leapt over it to confuse the United defence, leaving Welbeck with an opportunity to beat Andre Onana to give Roberto De Zerbi’s men the lead.

Hojlund thought he had levelled for United in the 41st minute, but his goal was ruled out after Marcus Rashford was adjudged to have allowed the ball to roll out of play before sending it to the Danish hitman.

The second half was not different for United as Brighton took off where they left off. Pachal Gross got the second in the 53rd minute after a clever feint took Lisandro Martinez out of the way. With the coast clear, the German midfielder slotted past Onana to leave the United fans demoralised in the stands.

It turned darker for Manchester United as substitute Joao Pedro found the back of the net in the 71st minute. His beautiful shot eluded an outstretched Onana to hand Brighton their third goal of the day.

Manchester United, riddled with injuries and some controversy with Jadon Sancho and Antony, grabbed a consolation in the 73rd minute, with 20-year-old substitute Hannibal Mejbri scoring from outside the box.

Brighton are now on a run of four successive Premier League wins over their hosts, and this victory brought more boos at the final whistle, though not on anywhere near the same scale as when Hojlund was withdrawn.
