Burnley started the game confidently as they played the ball between the goalkeeper and defenders without panic in the opening minutes. It almost backfired, but Marcus Rashford shot wide off James Trafford’s post.
Burnley could have found the back of the net through Zeki Amdouni’s header but Andre Onana, who had a nightmare against Bayern Munich in the Champions League during the week, provided a top save in the 10th minute.
Defender Johnny Evans, who started for United for the first time since March 2015, thought he had scored in the 25th minute, but his header from a corner was ruled out after the Video Assistant Referee spotted Rasmus Hojlund had impeded Trafford.
However, the veteran defender found Fernandes with a long ball, with the Portuguese midfielder firing it first time past Trafford to ease the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag. His goal came in the 45th minute.
Amdouni had an even better chance when he was played through by Aaron Ramsey, but a low shot cannoned off the foot of the post.
