Early life and education 

Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, was born on 2 July 1991 in the Nigerian city of Port Harcourt, Rivers State. His father owned a welding business, while his mother was a translator. Benson Idonije, his grandfather, used to manage Fela Kuti. Bose Ogulu, his mother, would eventually become his manager.

Ogulu grew up in southern Nigeria and began using FruityLoops to create his own beats. 

He went to Corona Secondary School in Agbara, Ogun State.

Burna Boy created a music band that performed at concerts when he was in secondary school. He moved to London to continue his schooling; he went to the University of Sussex to study Media Technology. he dropped out due to his love of music.

Burna Boy’s mother saw his love for music and arranged for him to work as an intern at a radio station. After work, Burna Boy would head to the studio and record songs.

Burna Boy describes his style of music as Afro-fusion. He got his inspiration from dancehall and Afro-beat musicians; an example of such a musician is Fela Kuti.

The talented musician rose to stardom in 2013 after the release of his song like to party. The song was a lead single in his album L.I.F.E.

The album served as a follow up to his second mixtape, Burn Identity, which he released in 2011.

The album sold 40,000 copies on the first day of its release. Aristokrat Records later sold its marketing rights to Uba Pacific for N10 million. Five singles preceded the album’s release: “Like to Party”, “Tonight”, “Always Love You”, “Run My Race”, and “Yawa Dey”.

Burna Boy secured a deal with Bad Habit/Atlantic Records in the United States and Warner Music Group in the rest of the world in 2017. Outside, his third studio album was his major-label debut.

Burna has two siblings, Singer Nissi Ogulu and stylist Ronami Ogulu.

The musician is not yet married. He was in a relationship with British Jamaican musician Stefflon Don.

The relationship is reported to have ended after he reportedly cheated on her with a lady called Joe Pearl.

His family is connected to late Musicians Fela Kuti as both his mother and grandfather were once his managers.

His mother, Bose Ogulu, manages his music career and his sister Nissi.
