Zamora was arrested in 2018 when the stepmother of a 13-year-old boy noticed that he was acting suspiciously and wanted to shut his door at night. The boy’s stepmother installed a parental monitoring app called “Sentry” on his phone and subsequently began getting alerts about inappropriate texts, making her confront the boy. He confessed that he had been having sex with his sixth-grade teacher and the illegal affair began sometime in February 2018.

Court documents first obtained by the Arizona Republic showed that Zamora groomed the boy for sex through special attention, explicit texts and naked photos of herself. In one of the texts, Zamora wrote, “I want you too, baby, so bad…I want you every day with no time limit.”

Hence, Zamora sexually abused the boy several times. According to the Maricopa County Police, Zamora played an educational video during one of her classes. While other students watched the video, Zamora sexually abused the victim in the back of the classroom.

At another time, the victim and a friend stayed after school. They would later tell the police that Zamora asked the victim’s friend to be a lookout while they had sex.

On March 22, 2018, Zamora was arrested and charged with nine counts of sexual conduct with a minor, two counts of molestation of a child and one count of obscene material transmitted to a minor. At first, she denied the sexual abuse allegation and even turned down any request to talk to the media. However, she pleaded guilty to the crime in June 2019.

On July 12, 2019, Zamora was sentenced to 20 years in prison. During the hour-long hearing, Zamora apologised for her actions but insisted that she was not a monster. However, she admitted that she would seek therapy and move forward.

Meanwhile, the victim’s parents, who were not in court during the sentencing, had their impact statements read. The victim’s mother said she hated Zamora for what she did to her son while the boy’s father said the family would “defeat” Zamora and his son “will grow up and have a good life”.

The victim’s parents also filed a lawsuit against Liberty Elementary School District for failing to report the abuse sooner.

Zamora was married to Daniel Zamora, who supported his wife throughout the trial. Daniel himself was sued by the victim’s parents for failing to alert authorities after he learned of the ongoing molestation.

According to police reports, Daniel Zamora called the father of the victim after he learned of his wife’s misconduct.

“This whole situation is crazy,” Daniel Zamora told the boy’s father. “I’ve never heard of anything like this in my entire life. I understand as a parent you have to be livid and hurt. As a husband, I am distraught. I’m hurt.”

He pleaded with the victim’s parents to settle the matter without calling the police and tried to defend his wife, saying she was a good teacher who would do anything to help her students.

However, the angry victim’s father would not agree to any plea.

“Your wife decided to be a monster and prey on a child,” the victim’s father said. “She scarred my son mentally. Do you understand what a 13-year-old boy did? Having sex with a teacher? Do you get that at all?”

The father then said, “Do me a favour, do not call this number back again. The next time you’ll hear from me will be in court.”

However, Daniel Zamora and the victim’s parents settled the civil lawsuit for an undisclosed amount.

In 2020, Zamora reportedly filed for divorce from husband Daniel, stating that “our marriage is broken beyond repair [‘irretrievably broken’] and there is no hope of reconciliation”.
