Emerging reports indicate that over 50 kidnapped children have reportedly discovered in an underground apartment of a church building in Ondo State.

The Punch reported that the kids were discovered in the Valentino area of Ondo town on Friday evening, July 1.

A source said the pastor of the church and some members have been arrested, while the victims have been rescued by the police.

A Twitter user, Valiant Samson Idowu-Alaba, who shared a video of the alleged incident said the children were kept hungry in an underground cell of the church.

”Pastor, other members of a church in Valentino Area of Ondo town, Ondo state arrested by the police following the discovery of more than 50 children kidnapped and kept hungry in an underground cell of the church,” he said.

The spokesperson for the Ondo police command, Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the incident to The Punch.

She said the victims had been taken to the Akure headquarters of the command.

 “I don’t have the details yet but they are bringing the victims to the headquarters. I will give you the details as soon as I get it from the DPO,” the spokesperson stated.

Kidnapping has become endemic in Nigeria, particularly in the northern parts of the country where heavily armed bandits are waging their own insurgency,

The inability of security agencies to rescue victims and arrest the perpetrators has prompted citizens to make ransom payments instead of contacting the police.
