Bobby pins are small yet indispensable tools in the world of hairstyling, known for their ability to hold hair in place with remarkable ease and discretion. Often overlooked, these unassuming clips have a rich history and a variety of uses that extend beyond mere hair management.
Originally designed to complement the bobbed hairstyles that gained popularity in the early 20th century, bobby pins have evolved into a staple accessory for individuals seeking to create intricate hairstyles or simply tame unruly strands.
What are bobby pins?
A bobby pin, also known as a kirby grip, is a type of hairpin typically made of metal or plastic. It is used in hairstyling to hold hair in place. Bobby pins are small, double-pronged clips that slide into the hair with the prongs open and then close over the hair to secure it. While they are usually plain and unobtrusively coloured, some bobby pins are elaborately decorated or jewelled.
History of bobby pins
The origins of bobby pins can be traced back to the English manufacturers, Kirby, Beard & Co. Ltd. of Birmingham, who produced hairpins similar to the modern bobby pin before its invention. Their trademarked “Kirbigrip” closely resembled the bobby pin.
The bobby pin itself was invented by Luis Marcus, a San Francisco-based cosmetics manufacturer, after World War I. He originally sold two handmade bobby pins for 35 cents. Although Marcus considered naming the pin after himself, he ultimately chose to name them “Bobby” after the popular bobbed hairstyle that came into fashion at the time.
Appearance and variations
Bobby pins come in a variety of colours to blend in with different hair shades, such as blonde, brown or red.
Some bobby pins are made without the wavy rigid side and instead have a smooth, curved design. This variation helps with grip and allows the pin to stay closer and more tightly attached to the hair. Decorated bobby pins – similar to barrettes – are sometimes meant to be noticed as a decorative element in the hair. They can feature beads, ribbons or other details and are often used to pull back front sections of hair while adding a decorative touch.

Bobby pins use
The primary function of a bobby pin is to secure hair in various styles, such as up-dos and buns, and to achieve a sleek look. To use a bobby pin effectively, hold the hair in the desired position and push the bobby pin (with the straight side up) into place. The wavy side of the pin should face downwards to provide better grip.
Bobby pins can also be used to create hairstyles like finger waves. After applying styling mousse, comb the hair straight and push it upward toward the roots to form waves about two inches apart. Place a bobby pin in the trough of each wave, allow the hair to dry, and then remove the pins. Thin bobby pins are ideal for holding back strands of front hair, allowing you to change the entire look of your hairstyle.
Decorative elements
Decorated bobby pins are sometimes meant to be noticed as a decorative element in the hair. They can feature beads, ribbons or other details and are often used to pull back front sections of hair while adding a stylish touch. Newer designs even incorporate words such as ‘love’ and ‘queen’, allowing you to make a statement without saying a word.
Holding head coverings
In addition to securing hair, bobby pins can be used to hold head coverings like headbands, bandanas, and yarmulkes in place.
Nail art
Bobby pins can be used to create intricate nail art designs. The pointed tip of a bobby pin is perfect for adding details like animals, flowers, or stripes to your nails, allowing you to achieve a professional look at a fraction of the cost.
Securing loose ends
If a hem starts coming undone while you are out and about, a bobby pin can hold it in place until you can sit down and hem it up properly. Bobby pins can also be used to secure the loose end of a belt.
Keeping things closed
Instead of using clothespins or clips, bobby pins can be used to keep chips and other baggies closed and their contents fresh.

How to use bobby pins
Here is how to use bobby pins effectively:
Positioning the bobby pin
Ensure the wavy side of the bobby pin faces downwards. The textured side helps it grip the hair better.
For maximum hold, position the bobby pin against the direction your hair is being pulled. Then, rotate it and push it in the opposite way (the direction your hair is being pulled). This will pull your hair together without making the pin visible.
Enhancing grip
Spritz the bobby pin with a dry shampoo before pushing it into your hair. This will prevent slippage.
If you have short strands around your face that would not stay in place when you tie your hair back, use bobby pins to pin these sections to the side.
Versatile uses
When braiding your hair, use a bobby pin instead of a chunky hair tie at the end of the braid. It will look like the braid is magically staying put. To prop up a drooping ponytail, attach two bobby pins to the hair tie so your ponytail rests higher. The thin ones can be used to hold back strands of front hair, often changing the entire look of your hairstyle.
