BBNaija: Phyna receives grand prize as organisers reveal amount spent on show

Organisers of Big Brother Naija have revealed that it spent about N4.7 billion to produce the recently concluded seventh season of the reality TV show.

John Ugbe, Chief Executive Officer of MultiChoice Nigeria, disclosed this at the prize presentation ceremony for Phyna, the winner of the show, on Tuesday in Lagos. Phyna – whose real name is Ijeoma Josephina Otabor – was declared the winner of BBNaija season 7 on 2 October after she spent 72 days in the Big Brother House and garnered the highest number of votes from the viewers in the final week of the show.

According to Ugbe, over 1,200 persons were employed directly and indirectly throughout the show. He added that the show benefitted the Nigerian economy as the organisers made economic expenses for various items such as licensing, food items, and production.

The MultiChoice CEO also lauded the sponsors of the show for this season, noting that for the first time, the housemates won over N100 million in prizes during the various sponsored tasks.

Also speaking, Busola Tejumola, Executive Head of Content (West Africa), MultiChoice Nigeria, stated that over a billion votes were sent in by the viewers for the various housemates throughout the season.

Tejumola stated that the company will continue to provide more content offerings for its subscribers, following the conclusion of the reality TV show.

In her remarks, Phyna , who claimed the N100million grand prize, said she was elated at winning the grand prize after four attempts at auditioning for what is said to be Africa’s biggest reality TV show. She stated that at her fifth time of trying, which eventually led to her being chosen as a housemate, she has indeed “levelled up”, a reference to this season’s theme.

Ayo Akinola, Head of Business Development at Piggyvest, the headline sponsor of the show, stated that the company’s sponsorship was a rewarding experience as it gained more customers as a result of the publicity it gained.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of a N50 million cheque and the key of a brand new Innoson SUV to Phyna.

Other prizes to be received by the BBNaija season 7 winner are cash prizes from Piggyvest and Flutterwave, a trip to Dubai for two from TravelBeta, a brand new Camon 19 Tecno phone, electronics from Nexus and a year’s supply of Pepsi.

Phyna also got products from Evans Industries, dairy products from Arla Dano, packs of MunchIt and cartons of Waw detergent.
