The Ark of Oyedepo is a 100,000-seater auditorium that will be built by the Living Faith Church. Founded by Bishop David Oyedepo in 1983 with just four members, the Living Faith Church, also known as the Winners Chapel, has grown to be one of the largest churches in Nigeria. The church has its headquarters located in Ota, Ogun State.

The current auditorium, which comfortably houses about 50,000 worshippers, was once the largest church in Nigeria until Dunamis Glory Dome took over in 2018. The Living Faith Church has a global network of churches with over 6 million members in 147 countries.

The Ark of Oyedepo construction

The Ark of Oyedepo construction

The Ark of Oyedepo was initially christened “Faith Theatre” during the announcement of the project in 2015. However, construction began after a groundbreaking ceremony on 25 March 2021.

According to Oyedepo, construction was delayed after God instructed him not to begin the project at the planned time. However, the project is constructed on 1,000 acres of land behind Covenant University, within the vast premises of the current church building.

“The Ark’s” architectural design was modelled after the exact shape of biblical Noah’s ark with its height like a 12/14-storey building, according to the media consultant to the Church, Prof. Sherriff Folarin, who spoke to The Guardian. Folarin also stated that the project would cover the whole of the former Faith Academy Secondary School.

A trained architect himself, Bishop Oyedepo believes in professionals and has recruited a team of consultants, comprising indigenous architects, engineers, electricians, and surveyors among others. Another architect and member of the church, Dr Gbenga Alalade Johnson, did the design of the project.

Some of the unique features of the Ark of Oyedepo include prayer booths, the Nation’s accommodation, a baptism pool, a twin Tower (12-storey building), a worship Centre (100,000-seater), The Dominion Bookshop, WOFBI (3,000-capacity Bible School Facility) and an audio/visual theatre. According to The Guardian, other likely features of the project are a shopping mall, food court and a rotating altar.

Cost of the Ark of Oyedepo

According to Sahara Reporters, the construction project of the Ark of Oyedepo will cost the sum of N160 billion. N45 billion has reportedly been released for the project.  The report also revealed that Bishop Oyedepo said members of the church would not be tasked to contribute to the project.

“Not one dime of the money contributed to this project since 2015 has been touched and the Church has maintained strict budgeting and never going out of her budget,” he added.

The Ark of Oyedepo will specifically accommodate 106,000 seats. This includes a 24-Floor Mission Tower (International Headquarters Facility) made up of two twin towers of 12 floors each. Upon completion, the existing 50,000-seater Faith Tabernacle will be converted into an overflow facility.

The new auditorium will reduce the number of services, but accommodate all the attendees on Sunday and during Shiloh or other special services.

Conclusion

The Living Faith Church has embarked on another humongous project that will be completed in 2023. Already tongues are wagging, with many church critics questioning the essence of building a megachurch amid poverty.

However, Oyedepo is going in line with his vision, which is to spread the gospel of Christ. If building a megachurch will help him do it, so be it. The Ark of Oyedepo is not Nigeria’s problem. We can look at it as a positive thing for the country. Nigeria’s reputation on the global scene is nothing but appalling. Completing “The Ark” will help boost the country’s image internationally.
