A Nigerian Higher National Diploma (HND) graduate has risen beyond several obstacles to win fully-funded Ph.D. scholarships to 7 top US universities.

The young lady, Islamiyat Ojelade, was the 2017/18 overall best graduating student at the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun state, Nigeria.

Islamiyat, who studied Science Laboratory Technology (Chemistry Major) for her HND, shared the good news via a LinkedIn post.

In Nigeria, HND graduates are usually discriminated against and often have to take a postgraduate diploma before they can study for a Master’s degree.

She said she was scared after graduating from the polytechnic and didn’t know what to do next but decided to discuss her aspirations with some people.

However, only a few supported her morally and financially, while others doubted her.

“Considering the dichotomy between HND and BSc in Nigeria, I was scared and confused on what next to do after my undergraduate studies.

I summoned the courage to discuss my ‘big dream’ with some people, including friends, fathers, mothers, and lecturers.

As you would expect, very few among them keyed into this and supported me morally and financially. Others doubted if I would be able to get a Ph.D. with the HND,” she said.

However, the young lady has chosen to accept the offer from Florida State University.

According to Islamiyat, she got free mentorship after engaging a tweet from Dr. Babajide Ojo of Bestman Academy.

Islamiyat Ojelade mentioned hardwork, resilience, prayers, and the right people by her side as factors that have helped her achieve her dreams.
