Ademola Lookman scores hat-trick as Atalanta end Leverkusen’s fairytale, win Europa League title

Atalanta emerge Europa League champions

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman was the hero for Atalanta as they beat Bayer Leverkusen to lift the Europa League trophy at the Dublin Arena in Ireland on Wednesday night.

Lookman and his teammates were too hot to handle for Xabi Alonso’s side, which featured Nigerians Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella, who had been unbeaten in 51 games before tonight.

The former Everton player scored in the 12th, 26th, and 75th minutes to become the first player to score a hat-trick in the Europa League final and the sixth to achieve the feat in a major UEFA competition.

His hat-trick follows Jupp Heynckes’ for Borussia Monchengladbach in the 1975 UEFA Cup.

Atalanta’s Europa triumph is their second trophy ever after their Coppa Italia title 61 years ago.

“One of the best nights of my life.

“Amazing performance from the team, we did it, we did it, we did it! Fantastic.

“They do always say third time lucky, so yeah it is for us today [winning a final at the third attempt this season].

“I’m just happy we won. We won today so yes, very pleased.

“100% [we’re partying tonight]! We’ve got to celebrate, we made history tonight,” Lookman told TNT Sports after the match.

An excited Gian Piero Gasperini said leading his side to the title, “It’s not just that we won, it’s how we won!

“We’ve beaten Liverpool when they were top of the Premier League table, Sporting and now Bayer Leverkusen… we are extremely proud.”
